History & Background
The School of Mobile Computing and Communication started as the Center for Mobile Computing and Communication and was declared as a Center for Excellence by UGC. The center was subsequently promoted to the School of Mobile Computing and Communication in 2006.
The school has an objective of promoting study and research activities in various areas of Mobile Computing and Distributed Computing. An AICTE-approved 2-year Post-Graduate Degree Course on Distributed & Mobile Computing has been offered since the 2006 academic session. In addition, the School regularly organizes short-term courses in Mobile and Distributed Computing, now evolving heavily into Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Edge Intelligence architectures.
The Mobile Intelligence Frontier
In the modern computing era, SMCC has positioned itself at the forefront of Mobile Intelligence. We are actively converging our 20-year legacy in distributed systems with next-generation AI & Generative AI research.
Edge AI
Optimizing Deep Learning models for resource-constrained mobile hardware.
GenAI & LLMs
Exploring Generative AI applications and Large Language Model deployment on handhelds.
Federated Learning
Privacy-preserving distributed training across massive mobile device networks.
Detailed Overview
Centre for Mobile Computing and Communication in Jadavpur University was established in 2004 under the University with Potential for Excellence Programme. In 2006, the School of Mobile Computing and Communication was set up and the activities of the centre began being carried out under the umbrella of the school.
Further to the promotion of research activities which was one of the objectives of the centre, the school focused on strengthening of specialized education in the area of Mobile Computing and Communication. During the 20 years of establishment, the major objectives pursued by the centre and then by the school are:
- Creation of state-of-the-art infrastructure and laboratories for carrying out teaching and research in mobile computing and communication and in related areas.
- Initiation of an M. Tech course in Distributed and Mobile Computing.
- Boosting of Research Activities through Involvement of many faculty members from various departments of the University in research and development activities in mobile computing and communication.
- Organization of National / International conferences, seminars, short term courses targetting different academicians and students of the state.
- Participation in various outreach programs with social importance.
- Establishing collaboration and relationship with different industries and institutions in the country and abroad.
- Modern Extension: Pursuing innovative research in Generative AI (GenAI) and Edge Intelligence.
The primary objective of the School has always remained to deploy state-of-the-art infrastructure within the University and to assist the students and researchers of the University to use this infrastructure and thus enabling them to achieve world-class standard in study and research.
